Illness and health issues are the tests from Allah, and they’re also an inevitable part of life. 5 Duas for Health Recovery

1. Dua for Healing

Adhib al-ba’s Rabb an-naas, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifa’a illa shifa’uka, shifa’an la yughadiru saqama — Sahih Muslim (2191)

Meaning:

“O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.”

A’isha(RA) reported that whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited a sick person, he would recite this supplication. After witnessing this practice of the Prophet ﷺ, the people of Madinah also began reciting this dua as a prayer for healing whenever they visited a sick companion.

2. Dua of Prophet Ayyub (AS) for Sickness

Rabbi inni massaniyad-durru wa anta arhamur-rahimeen — Surah Al-Anbiya (21:83)

Meaning:

“My Lord! Suffering has touched me, but You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”

Prophet Ayyub (AS) was tested by Allah with a prolonged and severe illness. The disease spread throughout his entire body, causing him immense physical hardship. Some narrations mention that his condition became so severe that people stopped visiting him. Only his faithful and loyal wife, Rahma, remained by his side, caring for him day and night.

After many years of suffering, when the pain became overwhelming, Prophet Ayyub (AS) made a very gentle and humble dua. His prayer was not a complaint, but a soft expression of his pain while still praising Allah. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged Muslims to recite this dua.

3. Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ Dua for Good Health

Allahumma ‘aafinee fee badanee, Allahumma ‘aafinee fee sam’ee, Allahumma ‘aafinee fee basaree, La ilaha illa Anta — Abu Dawud 4/324

Meaning:
“O Allah, grant me health in my body. O Allah, grant me health in my hearing. O Allah, grant me health in my eyesight. There is no god but You.”

Abdur-Rahman ibn Abu Bakr (RA) reported that he heard his father, Abu Bakr (RA), reciting this dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening. Abdur-Rahman asked him about it, and Abu Bakr (RA) replied, “My son, I saw the Prophet ﷺ reciting this dua, and I love to follow his Sunnah.”

This narration shows that this was a dua of the Prophet ﷺ, which he used to recite three times in the morning and evening for protection and healing from illness.

4. Dua for Seeking Protection from Harmful Diseases

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-barasi, wal-jununi, wal-judhami, wa sayyi’il-asqam — Sunan Abi Dawud (1554)

Meaning:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from leprosy, madness, mutilation, and evil diseases.”

The Prophet ﷺ sought protection from all such diseases that are epidemic in nature, such as leprosy, insanity, mutilation, and all other harmful and dangerous illnesses. These kinds of diseases are considered severe and destructive.

If we look at today’s time, illnesses like pox, cancer, AIDS, polio, and similar conditions also fall under these major harmful diseases. On the other hand, there are minor illnesses, such as fever, cold, flu, and headaches, which serve as a means of purification for a believer. So, for protection from epidemic diseases, the Prophet ﷺ used to recite this dua.

Allahumma ishfi mardana wa marda al-muslimeen.

Meaning:
“O Allah, heal our sick and the sick among the Muslims.”

Allahumma inni as’aluka al-‘afwa wal-‘aafiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah

Meaning:
“O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and in the Hereafter.”
