It is a shield and safeguard for women’s dignity by allowing them to value their character, not just their appearance.

In this article, we will be exploring the importance of the Hijab and why it is necessary for a woman to wear a Hijab.

What is the Importance of the Hijab in Islam? Basic Reasons

Hijab is the Identity of Muslim women

In many ways, Hijab is considered to be an identification for Muslim women. Before Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) the lives of women were difficult and Islam introduces the women as equal member of the society. Women lives have made easier by Islam and Quran. Islam provides alot of advantages to women both at home and society.

They have a right to be equal members of society, the right to be educated, the right to earn and spend, the right to own property, and much more. With Hijab, they are getting all their basic rights.

The Qur’an refers to believing women and their distinct attire:

O Prophet! Ask your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies. In this way, it is more likely that they will be recognized ˹as virtuous˺ and not be harassed. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Obeying Allah’s Command

The main reason for wearing the Hijab is to obey the command of Allah. Allah clearly instructs the believing women to cover themselves.

The Quran clearly instructs Muslim women regarding covering:

وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا ۖ وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُيُوبِهِنَّ ۖ

“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments except what normally appears. Let them draw their veils over their chests.”

(Quran, Surah An-Nur, 24:31)

This verse clearly shows that Hijab is an instruction from Allah. By wearing the hijab, women show their obedience to Allah.

It Leads to the Rewards of Paradise

Modesty has always been a part of Islamic culture, and wearing the Hijab promotes modesty both physically and spiritually. When a women cover her body and head, it shows that she accepts the commands of Allah and she is demonstrating her faith in Allah and Islam, and at the end she will be rewarded with paradise.

As stated in the Qur’an:

“Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger will be admitted to Gardens under which rivers flow…” (Surah An-Nisa, 4:13)

It protects Women from Evil Eyes

The primary purpose of the hijab is to protect women and act as a shield for women. Allah protects women from sinful gazes who wear hijab and conceal their beauty. It also enables women and men to communicate properly by removing dirty thoughts between the opposite gender.

A woman wearing a hijab frees herself from meeting societal expectations, and she no longer needs to rely on her beauty to gain acceptance in society. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Modesty is part of faith.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 53)

Showing Islamic Identity

Hijab is a powerful way to show Islamic identity for Muslim women. When a woman wears a hijab, she clearly committing her faith in Allah and Islamic values. It also shows her connection to Islam and ALLAH. So, Hijab is a declaration both at a personal and public level for religious belief.

Empowering Women

Hijab is a source of empowerment for Muslim women. It allows Muslim women to set their own standards of self-worth and beauty.  Wearing a hijab shows her personal choice and resistance to the external pressure of society, like fashion and the modern world.

Hijab empowers women by giving them control over how they present themselves. It shifts focus from physical looks to personality, intellect, and faith.

Hijab in Modern Society

Today, hijab is more than a religious obligation, and it is a symbol of strength. In modern societies, Muslim women in hijab are educators, doctors, politicians, and leaders. They balance life between religious perspective and active participation in all aspects of life.

Despite facing discrimination in some parts of the world, many women continue to wear the hijab with dignity and resilience.

Conclusion

The importance of hijab in Islam is deeply spiritual and practical. It is not only a dress code but an act of worship and declaration of identity and a shield of modesty. For Muslim women Hijab is a source of pride and empowerment.
