Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Holy Quran. It is a blessed month that reminds Muslims of faith, patience, sacrifice, and devotion to Allah. Muslims around the world respect and honor this special month because of its spiritual importance and historical events.
Why is Muharram Important?
Muharram is known as “Muharram-ul-Haram,” which means the sacred month of Allah. During this month, Muslims are encouraged to increase good deeds, worship, and prayers. It is a time for reflection and strengthening one’s relationship with Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in the month of Allah, Muharram.”
This hadith shows the great virtue and blessings of this month.
The Significance of Ashura
The 10th day of Muharram is called Ashura. It is one of the most important days in Islamic history. On this day, Allah saved Prophet Musa (Moses) علیہ السلام and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh.
To thank Allah, Prophet Musa علیہ السلام used to fast on this day. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also encouraged Muslims to fast on Ashura.
Benefits of Fasting on Ashura
The Prophet ﷺ said that fasting on the day of Ashura removes the sins of the previous year. Muslims are encouraged to fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th.
The Lesson of Karbala
Muharram is also remembered because of the tragic event of Karbala. Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, sacrificed his life along with his companions for truth, justice, and Islam.
The sacrifice of Imam Hussain (RA) teaches Muslims to stand against ظلم (oppression), remain patient, and always follow the path of truth.
